From an onggi (traditional Korean earthenware) wine bottle from the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) to a Baccarat crystal vase and a Dior bag, the gifts exchanged between Korea and France will be on display at the National Palace Museum of Korea, commemorating the 140th anniversary of the two nations' diplomatic ties.

조선시대(1392~1910) 제작된 옹기 술병부터 바카라 크리스털 화병, 디올 백에 이르기까지 한국과 프랑스가 주고받은 선물이 한불 수교 140주년을 기념해 국립고궁박물관에 전시된다. 
 
In collaboration with the Presidential Archives of Korea, the museum will present “Gifts and Records: 140 Years of Korea-France Friendship,” an exhibition tracing the history of bilateral ties through gifts exchanged by leaders and official diplomatic records.

국립고궁박물관은 대통령기록관과 함께 양국 정상 간 주고받은 선물과 공식 외교 기록을 통해 한불 관계의 역사를 조명하는 전시 “선물과 기록: 한국과 프랑스 우정의 140년”을 선보인다. 
 
“Throughout Korea's history, from the Joseon Dynasty to the Korean Empire, provisional government and now the Republic of Korea, France has been a longstanding friend and partner,” said Lee Hong-ju, the curator of the exhibition, on Tuesday. “The exhibition looks into those 140 years of friendship through gifts and records.”

전시 기획자인 이홍주 학예연구사는 2일 “조선부터 대한제국, 대한민국 임시정부, 그리고 현재 대한민국에 이르기까지 프랑스는 오랜 친구이자 협력국이었다”고 말했다. 그는 “이번 전시는 선물과 기록을 통해 140년에 걸친 우정의 역사를 살펴본다”고 말했다.
 
The onggi wine bottle marks the first official gift exchange between the two countries, when Charles de Montigny, then the French consul in Shanghai, visited Joseon to rescue the crew of the French whaling ship Narval, which had drifted ashore on Bigeum Island in 1851.

전시된 옹기 와인병은 양국 간 첫 공식 선물 교환을 상징한다. 당시 상하이 주재 프랑스 외교관이었던 샤를 드 몽티니는 1851년 비금도에 표류한 프랑스 포경선 나르발호 선원들을 구조하기 위해 조선을 방문했다.
 
It was gifted to the consul by the people of Bigeum Island, as marked on the bottom of the bottle, and had been donated to the Musée National de Céramique de Sèvres in France. This is the bottle's first return to its home country in 175 years.

병 바닥의 기록에 따르면 이 병은 비금도 주민들이 영사에게 선물한 것이며, 이후 프랑스 세브르 국립도자박물관에 기증됐다. 이번 전시를 계기로 175년 만에 처음으로 고향을 찾은 것이다.
 
Along with the onggi wine bottle, the chronologically laid-out exhibition opens with items that mark the first exchange between the two countries in the first of its five sections, including a Korean-French dictionary compiled by French missionaries in Korea.

연대순으로 다섯 개 부분으로 구성된 이번 전시는 첫 섹션에서 옹기 술병과 함께 양국 간 최초의 교류를 보여주는 물건을 보여준다. 여기에는 프랑스 선교사들이 한국에서 편찬한 한국-프랑스어 사전도 포함된다.
 
The second section showcases the original documents of the Treaty of Friendship and Commerce between Joseon and France, signed on June 4, 1886. The treaty was drafted in both Chinese characters and French, with two copies produced in each language. Korea currently possesses only the Chinese-language version, which is housed at the National Library of Korea.

두 번째 섹션에서는 1886년 6월 4일 체결된 조불수호통상조약의 원본 문서를 선보인다. 이 조약은 한문과 프랑스어로 작성됐으며 각 언어별로 두 부씩 제작됐다. 현재 한국은 국립중앙도서관에 보관된 한문본만 소장하고 있다.
 
The agreement granted legal protection to French missionaries and allowed them to travel throughout the country with valid passports. It also provided the legal basis for missionary activities in Joseon, including the building of Myeongdong Cathedral in central Seoul today. The original record of land purchases for the cathedral's construction by Bishop Marie-Jean-Gustave Blanc is also on display.

이 협정은 프랑스 선교사들을 법적으로 보호하고 유효한 여권을 소지한 경우 전국을 자유롭게 이동할 수 있도록 허용했다. 또 이 협정은 오늘날 서울 명동성당 건립을 포함한 조선 내 선교 활동의 법적 기반을 마련했다. 마리 장 귀스타브 블랑 주교가 성당 건립을 위해 토지를 매입한 원본 기록도 함께 전시된다.
 
From the third section is where a series of exchanged gifts, some of which are lavish, reveals, reflecting the close and active relationship they maintained over the years.
