Despite polls suggesting the ruling bloc holds the advantage ahead of Korea’s June 3 local elections, anxiety over “shy conservatives” is resurfacing within the Democratic Party (DP). DP candidates in Daegu and South Gyeongsang warned that conservative voters in the Yeongnam region often stay silent in surveys but mobilize on Election Day. At the same time, DP are also hoping for “shy progressives” in traditionally conservative strongholds. Political observers, however, say hidden voters on both sides may matter less than turnout itself, especially as disillusioned opposition supporters increasingly consider staying home.
