The secrets behind the massive success of BTS : With social media, the group has found fans all around the world

BTS received the Album of the Year award on the second day of the two-day Golden Disc Awards held on Jan. 12 for their album โ€œLove Yourself: Her.โ€ From left: V, Jin, Jungkook, Suga, RM, Jimin, and J-Hope.

K-pop sensation BTS recently wrapped up its fourth official global fan meeting which brought together more than 40,000 fans at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Guro District, western Seoul. During the three-hour gathering, the seven boys shared their happiest memories with their fans, who are known as ARMY. At the end of the event, members shared how grateful they are to be able to perform in front of their fans and added, โ€œWhen we look at the BTS ARMY, we feel so happy, loved and inexplicably thankful.โ€

The group always shares how gratified they are of their supporters and how they wish to be connected with their fans. When they are not in front of the cameras, they turn on their smartphones and share what they are doing at the moment. Unlike other top stars who are eager to protect their private lives, the groupโ€™s seven members are not afraid to show off personal moments to their fans.

Over the years, the group has worked to eliminate the walls that stand between them and the BTS ARMY. Fans feel like they are always connected, and the group enjoys being so.

After performing at the American Music Awards last year, they could have gone to a fancy party by themselves, but instead, they immediately returned to their hotel room and attributed the success of their performance to the ARMY. Not only they are skilled, but they try to remain humble.

The groupโ€™s agency, Big Hit Entertainment, doesnโ€™t do the math over whether the television programs they appear on are popular or not, but instead only care about the quality of their appearance itself, because they know that the groupโ€™s fans will follow the clips online wherever they are in the world. Fans volunteer to do translations of their appearances into to Russian, Chinese, Japanese and many more other languages.

As of Jan. 18, BTS has accumulated 12.02 million Twitter followers, 5.96 million Facebook likes and 5.8 million subscribers to their Bangtan TV channel on YouTube. The accumulated views of the footage the group has uploaded until now has surpassed 8.5 billion worldwide.

Experts say that the group has made the most out of living in a connected world. Through the groupโ€™s music videos and their daily updates on social media, fans living abroad have been able to connect with the group in a way that they never have been able to before.

K-pop has long been regarded for its pretty faces, addictive melodies and exciting dance moves. With the addition of the BTS membersโ€™ social media prowess, the group has been able to differentiate themselves in a highly competitive market and appeal to fans outside of Korea, which was part of the original marketing strategy of the groupโ€™s agency.

Bang Si-hyuk, CEO of the agency said in a 2016 interview with JoongAng Ilbo, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, โ€œFans are very valuable people. Knowing how much love and affection they give the group, it doesnโ€™t make sense if we donโ€™t reward them.โ€ RM, the leader of the group, also said, โ€œ[Because we know that fans like to see more of us,] we make content for many social media platforms, such as YouTube, Twitter and Instagram.โ€

In fact, through various social media platforms including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Naver V-Live, they share almost every part of their lives, such as which clothes they put on, the food they eat and what they do in their free time.

Professor Lee Jae-guk of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Sungkyunkwan University said, โ€œMore exposure to the public is a way to grow and enhance the groupโ€™s fandom. If the public sees the singers often, they will become more familiar and liked.โ€

Several experts analyzed the success of BTS and pointed to the active use of social media as the most significant contributor.

Seven success factors of BTS

1. Empathy

All of the groupโ€™s seven members were all born outside of the Seoul metropolitan area, and faced difficulties during their training period. Without the support of powerful agencies like SM, YG or JYP Entertainment, they were not guaranteed success, and had to work hard in order to achieve their goals. They include desperate emotions in the music, which resonate with many of their fans.

2. Honesty

The members of the group are quite honest when it comes to talking about themselves. Suga addressed depression during his early stages as a singer on mixtapes that he recorded under his previous stage name, Agust D.

In an appearance on the V-Live streaming platform, RM confessed that he was โ€œvery scared and quite anxious,โ€ mainly because he was responsible for speaking English during interviews with foreign media.

Author Kim Sung-chul has written in his book โ€œThis is Bangtan DNAโ€ that, โ€œBTS has the image of โ€˜friends that are connected through social mediaโ€™ instead of โ€˜pop idols that can only be seen on TV.โ€™ Therefore, their growth and development has the same effect as when someoneโ€™s family actually achieves something.โ€ (The group also is referred to as โ€œBangtanโ€ in Korea.)

3. Diligence

In addition to their music videos and performances, the group uploads self-produced tracks that have not been released as well as cover songs for their fans. All of the members are quite active in sharing their daily lives, which they upload on Bangtan Bomb on their YouTube channel Bangtan TV.

Through their videos, fans can see what the singers are up to without having to wait for them to appear on a television program.

4. Digital natives

Each of the seven members are digital natives, meaning that they grew up in the digital age, rather than learning to use digital devices as adults. Hence, each one of them is totally comfortable to start live streaming videos on their own. Jungkook even uploaded a three-minute-and-40-second-long video clip of Jimin when the two went to Japan, which was completely filmed and edited by himself.

5. Uniqueness

Through everyday live videos, the personalities of the seven members emerge. Their preferred music styles are revealed by showing the process of writing the lyrics and composing the melodies of their songs.

The personalities of each member became even clearer as they started to upload more content onto the Bangtan Bomb channel and social media. V frequently talks about his love for taking pictures with a film camera and Jungkook often introduces some of his favorite musicians on Twitter. Jin occasionally goes live for his show โ€œEAT Jin!โ€ which is one of the channels on their YouTube page, and shows off what he is eating.

6. Multilayer storytelling

The success of the group is unconventional considering the fact that they are a boy group from a smaller agency. Until they became popular worldwide, they were just one of the many groups from a minor agency working in the K-pop industry. Because of their unusual success, they have many stories to tell - best seen on their second album โ€œWings,โ€ which was partially inspired by the Hermann Hesse novel โ€œDemian.โ€

Prof. Kim Suk-young of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television said, โ€œ[The album] has classical aspects that embrace classical literature and movies.โ€

Some of the groupโ€™s content is connected to the past or foreshadows the future. Last May, Jin tweeted a picture of him holding a bouquet along with the caption โ€œSmeraldo,โ€ which is an Italian word that translates to emerald. Fans figured out that the tweet was alluding to the upcoming return of the group.

American music magazine Rolling Stone noted that, โ€œBTS builds mythologies around their albums.โ€

7. Donation

Among several objectives that the group has, one is โ€œto give positive influence.โ€ The โ€œLove Myselfโ€ global campaign is one example. The campaign is a partnership with the United Nations Childrenโ€™s Fund (Unicef) that the group is using to speak out against violence. It is a two-year fundraising program, and 3 percent of sales from the โ€œLove Yourselfโ€ album series are provided to the campaign. The group also pledged to donate 500 million won ($470,000) to Unicefโ€™s #ENDviolence program.
