This artifact was excavated from the tomb of King Muryeong (462?523) in Geumseong-dong, Gongju, South Chungcheong. It is believed to have been part of a pair of ornaments used to decorate the diadem, or crown, of King Muryeong, who ruled Baekje from 501?523. Baekje is one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea.
The tomb is similar to those found in the ancient Yang Dynasty of China. Its memorial stone provides details on its owner, making it the only tomb from this period to do so. The ornaments were found at the head of the queen, who was buried alongside her husband. The thin golden panel is inscribed with flame and lotus flower patterns, which is indicative of the Buddhist influence on the art and culture of the period.
