Bluewings seize Hauzen Cup

A decisive goal by Kim Dae-eui in the second half led the Suwon Samsung Bluewings to take the 2005 professional soccer Hauzen Cup last Sunday. Suwon beat Seongnam Ilhwa 1-0 in the final game held at the World Cup Stadium in Seoul.

With seven wins, four draws and one loss, Suwon was well ahead of Ulsan Hyundai Horang-i in the K-league team standings.

They also won the Super Cup against last year’s FA Cup winner, Busan I-Park.

Ulsan Hyundai, which beat Daejeon Citizen, had six wins, five draws and one loss.

This was a valuable victory for Suwon. Suwon’s defensemen, Park Kun-ha and Mato Neretljak, both wore facial protectors because of nose injuries.

Midfielders Kim Nam-il, Choi Sung-yong and Song Chong-gug were not in the game due to injuries although Kim Jin-woo and Kim Do-heon made up for their absence.

In the ninth minute of the second half, Seongnam’s forward, Shim Yeong-seong, dribbled Kim Do-hoon’s pass and bypassed Suwon goalkeeper Lee Woon-jae, but missed a shooting chance after it was blocked by the defense.

Suwon had a hard time finding an opportunity to score and substituted Kim Dae-eui with An Hyo-yeon.

Without missing a chance, Kim sent the ball from the right side of the box from a deflected corner kick in the 28th minute. Kim’s right foot shot on goal shook the net.

Clinging to hopes of winning the cup, Ulsan Horang-i fought hard during the game against Daejeon to no avail.

Brazilian Jose Carlos Ferreira Filho headed in Hyun Young-min’s free kick in the ninth minute of the first half.

Then, in the second half, Daejeon’s Lee Kwan-woo evened the score in the 26th minute.

Ulsan’s Yoo Kyoung-youl responded by sending the ball from the penalty spot into the net 10 minutes before the final whistle.
