Korea, Sweden discuss nuclear waste oversight

Nuclear watchdog officials from Korea and Sweden met Monday, and engaged in policy and regulatory discussions on high-level radioactive waste and small modular reactors.

The meeting held in Seoul follows a memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries in 2014, according to the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission.

Sweden is among the countries with advanced high-level radioactive waste (HLW) disposal technology and is the world's second country after Finland building a deep geological disposal facility for such waste.

"We plan to strengthen Korea's regulatory capabilities for HLW disposal facilities through our partnership with Sweden," the Korean nuclear agency said.
