KT said that it will recycle plastics from discarded set-top boxes with LG Chem.
KT and its cable TV companies — KT Skylife and HCN — signed a memorandum of understanding with LG Chem and KT’s set-top box suppliers on Thursday at the Novotel Ambassador Seoul Dongdaemun in central Seoul.
KT Skylife is a cable TV operator 49.99 percent owned by KT, and HCN is a broadcasting and internet service provider 100 percent owned by KT Skylife.
The companies will work together to use recycled materials in manufacturing set-top boxes and network equipment.
KT companies generate about 300 tons of plastic waste a year, according to KT. LG Chem will extract raw materials from plastic waste such as discarded set-top boxes and use it to produce a new product.
Starting this year, KT will produce 10,000 units of recycled set-top boxes and plans to supply 5 million units a year from next year.
