HD Hyundai lands record U.S. data center deal

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will supply 1,000 megawatts of its 9.6 megawatt HiMSEN engines worth 956 billion won ($673.8 million) for a data center operated by a major U.S. tech company.

The company said Monday it signed the contract with U.S. energy infrastructure developer Corban Energy Group, marking its largest-ever deal for power generation engines. Corban Energy Group supplies gas, liquefied natural gas and power products for data center construction and Department of Defense projects.

The deal follows a 627.1 billion won contract HD Hyundai Heavy Industries signed with U.S. developer AEG in April for data center power generation equipment.

The 9.6 MW HiMSEN engines are large medium-speed engines with high output that allows for 24-hour operation, the company said. 

The U.S. market for data center power equipment has grown rapidly amid the spread of AI services and rising cloud infrastructure investment. The Electric Power Research Institute has forecast that data centers' share of total U.S. electricity consumption could more than triple by 2030.

HD Hyundai's other affiliates are also expanding into the sector. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering is developing core technology for floating data centers, while HD Hyundai Electric and HD Hyundai Marine Solution are growing their power equipment supply and engine maintenance businesses.
