DP’s talk of ‘impeachment signs’ is just internal strife (KOR)

Democratic Party (DP) leader Kim Min-seok on Monday likened internal criticism of President Lee Jae Myung to “the signs that preceded the attempt by forces inside and outside the party to join hands and impeach President Roh Moo-hyun.” His remarks reflected frustration with party hard-liners who emphasize ideological purity in reform.

Earlier, Gyeonggi Gov. Choo Mi-ae criticized the nomination of a former prosecutor to head the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency, saying the administration was “cowering while leaning on insurrectionist forces.” Former DP leader Jung Chung-rae said on popular commentator Kim Eo-jun’s program that “the president was stabbed in the back by prosecutors.”

Factional conflict serious enough for the ruling party leader to invoke “impeachment” in the administration’s second year is troubling. The bigger problem, however, is that both sides are missing the point. Lee’s falling approval rating is not primarily because party unity has weakened or hardcore supporters have deserted over insufficiently forceful reform. The main reason is that the common sense, fairness and pragmatic centrism Lee emphasized have disappeared from governance.

Legislation by the ruling party, government policies and presidential appointments have repeatedly defied public common sense. Supplementary investigative authority was abolished without measures for crime victims. Real estate tax revisions increased burdens on owners of a single home who do not live in it. Current housing policies would label most nominees in the Aug. 30 Cabinet reshuffle speculators.

Yong Hye-in, nominee to head the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, became a proportional lawmaker through a satellite party yet resisted giving up her seat upon joining the Cabinet, defying convention. She eventually moved toward withdrawal, effectively shielding Justice Minister nominee Kim Seung-won, who faces more serious allegations. A drug-development lobbying scandal involving Kim has produced allegations involving human trials and stock manipulation that potentially endangered people’s lives and assets.

Amid these controversies, Lee’s job approval rating has fallen for nine consecutive weeks to 33.8 percent, according to Realmeter yesterday. In party support, the DP, at 36.1 percent, has fallen behind the People Power Party at 42.1 percent.

This is not because reform has been too weak or impure, nor because rival factions have obstructed it, as competing camps now claim. It reflects public disappointment with the conduct of government itself.

The ruling party should stop treating declining support as an internal ideological dispute and instead confront why voters are losing confidence.

The only way to win back voters who have turned away is to translate ordinary citizens’ common sense into government action. Internal feuding over which faction is more committed to reform merely distracts from that essential task.

“탄핵전조”까지 언급, 민심과 점점 멀어지는 여당 분란

김민석 더불어민주당 대표가 어제 이재명 대통령에 대한 당내 비판과 관련해 “안팎의 세력들이 힘을 합쳐 노무현 대통령을 탄핵하려 했던 전조와 비슷한 상황”이라고 했다. 개혁의 선명성만 내세우는 당내 강경파에 불만을 터뜨린 것이다. 앞서 추미애 경기도지사는 검찰 출신 중대범죄수사청장 후보자 지명에 대해 “내란세력에 업혀 전전긍긍한다”고 비판했다. 정청래 전 민주당 대표는 김어준씨의 방송에서 “검찰에 의해 대통령이 뒤통수를 맞았다”고도 했다. 집권 2년 차 여당 대표가 ‘탄핵’이라는 말까지 쓸 정도로 계파 갈등이 첨예한 것도 우려스럽지만, 더 큰 문제는 양쪽 모두 헛다리를 짚고 있다는 사실이다.

이 대통령 지지율 하락은 당력이 분산됐다거나 개혁의 선명성이 떨어져서 강성 지지층이 이탈한 것이 주원인이 아니다. 가장 큰 이유는 국정에서 이 대통령이 강조해 온 상식과 공정, 그리고 합리적 중도 실용의 노선이 자취를 감췄기 때문이다.

여당의 입법, 정부의 정책, 청와대의 인사는 국민의 상식을 외면하는 독선의 연속이었다. 범죄 피해자에 대한 아무런 대책도 없이 보완수사권을 폐지했고, 비거주 1주택자에게 세금 부담을 늘리는 부동산 세제 개편을 단행했다. 8·30 개각의 공직 후보자 대부분을 투기꾼으로 만드는 게 지금의 부동산 정책이다. 꼼수 위성정당으로 비례대표 의원이 되고도 겸직을 포기하지 않으려 한 용혜인 성평등가족부 장관 후보자는 결국 더 큰 의혹이 제기된 김승원 법무부 장관 후보자를 지켜주는 방패로 사퇴 수순을 밟았다. 김 후보자가 연루된 신약 로비 의혹은 인체 시험과 주가 조작 등으로 국민의 생명과 재산을 위태롭게 한 정황이 속속 드러나고 있다. 일련의 사태를 거치면서 대통령 국정 수행 지지율이 9주 연속 하락해 33.8%(리얼미터, 어제)에 이르게 된 것이다. 정당 지지도에서도 민주당(36.1%)은 국민의힘(42.1%)에 역전당했다. 지금 당 안팎에서 치고받고 있는 것처럼 개혁의 강도가 약하거나 순수성이 훼손돼서가 아니고, 진영 내 다른 계파가 개혁을 방해해서도 아니라 국정 운영 자체에 국민이 실망한 결과다. 떠난 민심을 되돌리는 길은 국민의 상식을 현실로 구현하는 것 말고는 없다.
